Want More Energy? Fill Your Tank! by Kristina Bailey

Life is full, often creating an energy crisis on a personal level. Busy schedules, obligations and stress deplete physical resources, and yet we push ourselves to keep going…to the point of running on empty. Take time to fill the tank so you can function more smoothly and efficiently. The right fuel is at your fingertips, but you have to intentionally reach for it and use it. The most effective way to increase and sustain your energy is to give your body what it needs: proper nutrition, exercise and rest.

Balance nutritional needs
Balance is the key when it comes to nutrition and energy. Fluctuations in blood sugar levels create drops in energy. In order to keep levels steady, eat moderately at regular intervals throughout the day. Include a healthy variety of fruits, vegetables, proteins and complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, which the body consumes at a slower rate. Slower consumption creates more stable energy. Avoid sugary foods which cause levels to spike and crash. And don’t forget to drink water! Mild dehydration can also cause fatigue.

Exercise regularly
Consistent physical activity increases energy by building muscle strength and endurance. Exercise stimulates activity in your heart and lungs and increases circulation of blood, carrying oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. It puts activity into motion within your system that continues beyond the moment. Start small (walking is great!) but do it regularly and watch your energy shift.

Reduce stress
Give yourself a break! Stress creates a huge drain on energy, both mentally and physically. Find moments to relax and breathe deeply, increasing oxygen intake and releasing tension. Allow for six to eight hours of sleep at night to give your body the chance to renew. And find something fun to do! Planning activities that you enjoy will boost your spirits, motivate you to be more active and will put more energy into motion.
